Care guidance

Do I need to go to the ER or Urgent Care?

If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Use the information below to help determine whether an emergency room or urgent care clinic is appropriate.


Emergency warning signs

  • Head injury with any symptoms, including headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness, lethargy, lack of coordination, confusion, or any other unusual symptom.
  • Difficulty breathing for any reason.
  • Temperature of 101.0 or higher with abdominal pain, rash, stiff neck, or any unexplained symptoms. Do not go to class.
  • Possible alcohol poisoning. Do not try to sleep it off or wait until morning.
  • Severe headache with high fever and/or stiff neck.
  • Broken bone or suspicion of a broken bone.
  • Severe abdominal pain or severe unexplained pain anywhere.
  • Involvement in a car accident.


Health concerns requiring medical evaluation

  • Diarrhea for more than 24 hours, or vomiting and diarrhea at the same time. Do not go to class.
  • Other injuries or illnesses that concern the student.
  • Temperature of 101.0. Do not go to class.
  • Eye injury.
  • Productive cough with yellow, green, or red sputum.
  • Animal bite.
